Transport has long been neglected as an extremely important part of health and well being. The availability of public and active (walking and cycling) transport services and facilities dictates the equitable accessability of our cities.
Our current reliance on private vehicles results in many negative outcomes, including air pollution, increased road congestion, longer hours spend commuting, sedentary lifestyles, pedestrian- and cycle- unfriendly streets, reliance on fosil fuels, and the list goes on.
Healthy Cities Illawarra has been involved in active transport projects, a regional transport taskforce, and continues to advocate, lobby and identify needs in the region in terms of sustainable transport.
Active transport particularly has a range of benefits thanks to it reducing car use at the same time as increasing exercise in our community.
