15TH ANNUAL AWARDS PRESENTATION

The region’s quiet achievers will be recognised at a gala presentation at the Novotel Northbeach, Wollongong, on Tuesday 1st June commencing at 10am.

Healthy Cities Illawarra Manager, Frank Wallner, will announce the presentation of 47 awards to individuals, community groups and other organisations which recognise their hard work and important contributions in creating a Healthy City. The awards presentation is an annual event which began in 1989.

“These awards are a way of showing our appreciation by acknowledging the efforts of many people who have voluntarily assisted in enhancing the overall quality of life for our community” Mr Wallner said.

Certificates will be presented in the following categories: Fundraising and Donations, Environment, Heritage and Culture, Community Aid and Services, Volunteer Work.

Chief Executive Officer for Illawarra Health, Dr Liz Gale will present 14 awards in the Community Aid and Services section including an award to Warwick and Alison Marsh for the establishment of the Fatherhood Foundation, Tauri D’Eatough & Kari Kristiansen for setting up the Taupu Surf School which teaches disadvantaged children from remote areas to surf. Other award winners include volunteers of the Drug Arm Street Team Van for support to people affected by drugs or alcohol.

Other VIP’s will present awards to individuals and groups who have raised substantial amounts of money for local charities such as the Mayflower Village’s Support Group which raised $40,000 and Wollongong Christian Surfers – for holding an annual paddle-a-thon to raise funds for Compassion Australia.

A number of Illawarra organisations will be recognised for the significant contributions they have made to enhancing health, environment or community well being. Some of these include Bluescope Steel for their voluntary involvement in Business Clean Up Australia Day, the Illawarra Mercury for their intensive campaign to upgrade the Princes Highway and 97.3 ABC Radio for fundraising and conducting a pre-Christmas road safety campaign.

The Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts Jazz Band will entertain guests throughout the morning. “These are people and groups who work not for reward or recognition, but because they want to make a difference to the lives and well-being of people in the Illawarra region. It is important that, as we strive to create a Healthy City, we pause long enough to see how these accumulated efforts are helping to create a better, more connected place” Mr Wallner said.
