HEALTHY CITIES ILLAWARRA’S
15TH ANNUAL AWARDS PRESENTATION
The region’s quiet achievers will be recognised at a gala presentation
at the Novotel Northbeach, Wollongong, on Tuesday 1st June commencing
at 10am.
Healthy Cities Illawarra Manager, Frank Wallner, will announce the presentation
of 47 awards to individuals, community groups and other organisations
which recognise their hard work and important contributions in creating
a Healthy City. The awards presentation is an annual event which began
in 1989.
“These awards are a way of showing our appreciation by acknowledging
the efforts of many people who have voluntarily assisted in enhancing
the overall quality of life for our community” Mr Wallner said.
Certificates will be presented in the following categories: Fundraising
and Donations, Environment, Heritage and Culture, Community Aid and Services,
Volunteer Work.
Chief Executive Officer for Illawarra Health, Dr Liz Gale will present
14 awards in the Community Aid and Services section including an award
to Warwick and Alison Marsh for the establishment of the Fatherhood Foundation,
Tauri D’Eatough & Kari Kristiansen for setting up the Taupu
Surf School which teaches disadvantaged children from remote areas to
surf. Other award winners include volunteers of the Drug Arm Street Team
Van for support to people affected by drugs or alcohol.
Other VIP’s will present awards to individuals and groups who have
raised substantial amounts of money for local charities such as the Mayflower
Village’s Support Group which raised $40,000 and Wollongong Christian
Surfers – for holding an annual paddle-a-thon to raise funds for
Compassion Australia.
A number of Illawarra organisations will be recognised for the significant
contributions they have made to enhancing health, environment or community
well being. Some of these include Bluescope Steel for their voluntary
involvement in Business Clean Up Australia Day, the Illawarra Mercury
for their intensive campaign to upgrade the Princes Highway and 97.3 ABC
Radio for fundraising and conducting a pre-Christmas road safety campaign.
The Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts Jazz Band will entertain
guests throughout the morning. “These are people and groups who
work not for reward or recognition, but because they want to make a difference
to the lives and well-being of people in the Illawarra region. It is important
that, as we strive to create a Healthy City, we pause long enough to see
how these accumulated efforts are helping to create a better, more connected
place” Mr Wallner said.
