Healthy Cities Illawarra is a unique organisation which has been at the forefront of approaches to health promotion which attempt to work on the underlying causes of ill-health. This is not straightforward since the social, economic and environmental causes of ill health are incredibly complex. Nevertheless, Healthy Cities Illawarra has been proud of its commitment to the principles of the Healthy Cities movement and its track record in dealing with some of these big picture issues. In 2005, the World Health Organisation recognised Healthy Cities Illawarra for its “track record in sustained improvement in the overall quality of life of its citizens using the Healthy Cities approach.”
