MEDIA RELEASE Thai delegation to visit Wollongong A team of 18 senior government officials from Thailand will visit Wollongong on Tuesday 7 August 2007 to study the successes of the Healthy Cities Illawarra organisation. The Thai officials will be briefed on a number of Healthy Cities programs and projects and will tour prominent local sites and programs. Healthy Cities is currently celebrating its 20th Anniversary in the Illawarra and its positive international reputation and awards have prompted the Thai visit. The Thai authorities hope that the lessons and experience gained by the local organisation will help them implement similar programs at home. Healthy Cities Illawarra is part of a worldwide movement founded by the World Health Organisation. It takes an holistic approach to health and works to improve and promote the overall health, physical environment and quality of life of the people of the Illawarra. The Thai delegation will receive an official welcome at Wollongong City Council at 10 am. (Meeting Rooms 2 & 3, Level 10) Site visits are scheduled to begin at Hill 60 from 1.30pm. HCI staff will brief the Thai’s on a range of programs in areas including children’s health, community building, environmental health and sexual health promotion. The Thai officials are from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, which is loosely on a par with a state government under the Australian system. HCI Manager Frank Wallner said the local organisation was honoured to receive the recognition afforded by the visit and was always pleased to share its experiences with the international community.
