“TIME OF OUR LIVES”
CELEBRATES ACTIVE AGEING
A photographic exhibition to celebrate International Day
for Older Persons will be officially opened on Wednesday 30 October 2002
at 11.00 am in the Wollongong City Council foyer.
The exhibition has been organised by the Healthy Cities Illawarra Aged
Task Force to highlight the importance of remaining active into our old
age.
“Growing older is a positive experience and many people continue
to make an enormous contribution to the community long after their formal
working life ends” said task force chairperson Mrs Joan Pilone.
Local Wollongong identity Barry Smith, who will open the exhibition,
has been a professional photographer for the past 20 years. Barry has
written seven books including ”Above the Illawarra” and “Barry
the Kid”. Despite health problems, Barry who is 60, continues to
work as a full time writer and photographer. He also maintains a photographic
library with thousands of local scenes.
“Time of Our Lives” features 28 photographs from local photographers
as well as a special collection of black and white photographs on loan
from the Older Women’s Network.
“With this exhibition we hope to promote healthy active ageing.
Remaining active, whether that be active in the mind, body or spirit ,
is the key to health and happiness into one’s old age.”
The exhibition will run from Wednesday 30 October until Friday 8 November
in the foyer of Wollongong City Council and admission is free.
