‘GETTING OUR CITY MOVING - HEALTHY TRANSPORT IN THE ILLAWARRA ’

Healthy Cities Illawarra is bringing American sustainable transport expert Professor John Pucher to the Illawarra to present Getting Our City Moving - a seminar describing why walking, cycling and public transport are important ingredients in a healthy and sustainable transport system for the Illawarra.

Prof. Pucher is currently a visiting professor at the Institute of Transport Studies at the University of Sydney, from his usual post at the Rutgers University of New Jersey.

Many other areas in Australia have already been enthusiastic recipients of his message, and Healthy Cities Illawarra is ensuring the Illawarra doesn’t miss out.

Ben Grounds, Community Environmental Health Officer of Healthy Cities Illawarra, said “Australia is reliant on transport that is unhealthy, polluting and expensive, and the Illawarra is no exception to this. Our dependence on cars contibutes to our failure to achieve enough daily exercise, and adversely affects many other aspects of public health.”

“Our suburbs have been created around the car, and this means our neighbourhoods are not child-friendly, our transport system is expensive and inequitable, and walking or cycling is difficult and unsafe,” added Mr Grounds.

The rising cost of petrol is making car travel more and more expensive, and now is an ideal time to consider sustainable transport alternatives.

Many countries have shown that the solutions to these unsustainable transport systems are achievable. Professor Pucher has travelled the world studying alternative transport methods, and will present ways in which the Illawarra can create healthy, clean and cheap transport.
