Photographic Exhibition celebrates
International Day for Older Persons
Healthy Cities Illawarra Aged Task Force are launching The ‘Time
of Our Lives’ photo exhibition at the Old Courthouse in Belmore
Basin on Wednesday the 1st of October, open for public viewing until Sunday
5th of October. The launch is being officially opened at 10am by Bronwyn
Endinger, Director of the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
Aged Task Force member and President of the Wollongong Camera Club, Norm
Melvin explained that “the exhibition challenges outdated perceptions
of older people by visually demonstrating active seniors fully engaged
in life’s opportunities, be it volunteering, singing, dancing or
even jumping out of planes and riding on camels”.
This is the second year that Healthy Cities Illawarra Aged Task Force
has run the ‘Time of our Lives’ photographic competition culminating
in an exhibition. With over 70 entries the exhibition has proven to be
a successful project for task force members and demonstrates that older
people are a valued resource to their families, their community and the
economy.
Frank Wallner, Manager of Healthy Cities Illawarra said that “In
the second half of the twentieth century, twenty years have been added
to the average life-expectancy worldwide. Old age is a new frontier. As
pioneers of this life extension, today’s elders are writing the
scripts for late-life, exploring new ways of being and this exhibition
certainly demonstrates local active seniors having the time of their lives”.
Part of the exhibition will be displayed at the Greater Union, Burrelli
Street from 6th October 2003.
