| MEDIA RELEASE Generations Come together to Uncover the Mystery of Mobile PhonesMobile phones are great for keeping in touch but for many older members of the community they can be confusing to operate and many of the features a mystery.
Fortunately, there are many “experts” around with most of our younger generation very familiar with this technology.
The Aged Task Force of Healthy Cities Illawarra has enlisted the help of Wollongong City Council’s Youth Services and will be bringing the two groups together with a special hands-on mobile phone learning workshop on Wednesday 26 th March.
Mobile phones are now a crucial part of the way society communicates and older people, like most others, want and need to be able to rely on them, particularly in an emergency. Families want an easy way to keep in touch and they are especially useful for older people who may be home alone or physically frail.
However, the complex technology is often difficult to understand, complicated to use and time consuming to become accustomed to. This is the third mobile phone workshop that the Aged Task Force has organized, and the workshops have proven to be a great way of overcoming the older generations’ lack of familiarity. “It’s also a great opportunity for young and older generations to get together in a really positive way”, said Norm Melvin, Aged Taskforce member. “We really appreciate young people freely giving their time.”
“Young people are vital members of our community and have a diverse range of skills and talents. Quick to learn any new technology, these workshops help older people with their skills while also raising the profile of our younger generations,” said Sarah Stewart, Wollongong Youth Services.
The workshop will be held at Wollongong City Library Theatrette, at 4.30pm, Wednesday 26 th March. There is no cost and afternoon tea will be provided.
