MEDIA RELEASE for TUESDAY 26 JUNE 2001
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF VOLUNTEERS -
HEALTHY CITIES ILLAWARRA
12th ANNUAL AWARDS PRESENTATION
The region’s quiet achievers will be recognised at a gala
presentation at the Novotel Northbeach, Wollongong, this Tuesday 26 June
commencing at 10.00 am.
Healthy Cities Illawarra Manager, Frank Wallner, will announce the presentation
of 58 awards to individuals and community groups in the categories of
fundraising, caring for our environment and community service. The presentation
is an annual event which recognises the hard work and commitment of a
diverse range of community members.
“These awards are a way of showing our appreciation by acknowledging
the efforts of many people who have voluntarily assisted in enhancing
the overall quality of life for our community” Mr Wallner said.
“The awards have been held annually but have special significance
in this, the International Year of Volunteers. It is the commitment of
volunteers and voluntary organisations that help to build and sustain
stronger communities” he said.
Kiama Mayor, Sandra McCarthy will present 13 Environment Awards, including
school awards to Dapto Public and Minnamurra Public Schools. Illawarra
Area Health Service Chief Executive Officer, Dr Tony Sherbon will present
a number of community service awards. The Wollongong High School Jazz
Band will entertain guests throughout the morning.
“These are the people who work not for reward or recognition, but
because they want to make a difference to the lives and well-being of
others. It is great to be able to say thanks and well done” Mr Wallner
said.
