Safe communities history

Healthy Cities Illawarra is one of the few Healthy Cities programs worldwide that has specifically identified injury prevention as a major component of their activities. Moreover, only the Illawarra, and in 1996 Noarlunga in South Australia, sought official WHO "Safe Communities" recognition.

Healthy Cities Illawarra took up the challenge to explore the potential of the Safe Communities concept. A workable partnership was achieved in the Illawarra, capitalising on existing resources and introducing injury prevention to a well established program of community based initiatives.

The Illawarra region was selected as one of three pilot Healthy Cities established in Australia in 1987, funded by the now Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health.

Current Projects

  • HCI has continued to operate the Illawarra Child Injury Prevention Task Force with a continued interest in the areas of drowning prevention and driveway safety. Education workshops were held for playgroups and also early childhood students as well as a number of public information booths at events regarding driveway safety.
  • In line with the emergence of National and State priority in relation to childhood obesity and physical activity the taskforce has also been investigating a strategy to promote active and safe play in the region and a number of grant applications were prepared to support this initiative.
  • We continue to maintain practical interest and support for the concept of Safe Communities in the Illawarra region. We participate in the Safe Communities network and also in the development of the Shoalhaven Aboriginal Safe Communities Program.
