Australia's
Oceans Policy
In
the 2003-04 Budget, the Government has delivered on its election commitments,
providing $18.2 million over the next two financial years for the ongoing
implementation of Australia's Oceans Policy ,including completion of the
draft South-east Regional Marine Plan , progress on the Northern Plan and
scoping of future regional marine plans.
At
the core of Australia's Oceans Policy is a new set of governance arrangements
representing executive
government, stakeholder peak bodies and an executive government agency. Leading
the implementation of Australia ’s Oceans Policy is a five-member Ministerial
Board, chaired by the Minister for the Environment and Heritage. The Board is supported
by two other key institutions:the National Oceans Advisory Group (NOAG) and the
National Oceans Office.
NOAG members are largely from the non-government sector, representing the interests
of industry, science, conservation and Indigenous Australians.Reporting to the
Ministerial Board,NOAG is the highest level stakeholder body involved in Australia ’s
Oceans Policy. Providing support for both the Ministerial Board and NOAG is the
Hobart-based National Oceans Office. Established in 1999,the Office now employs
more than 40 scientific and policy experts.
